On A Mission: An Honest Conversation On Decolonizing the Personal Development Industry, with Trailblazing Leader & Indigenous Author, Speaker & Mentor, Emily Anne Brant

Season #6 Episode #38

Welcome to Episode 38, On A Mission.

In this episode you get the privilege of meeting and learning from Emily Anne Brant — an indigenous author, speaker and mentor on a mission to decolonize the personal development, spiritual and coaching industry.

Emily shares how she grew up watching Oprah with her mom on a First Nation's Reservation in Northern Ontario, Canada. But then how, when she entered personal development programs and containers as a white presenting woman of mixed indigenous and settler ancestry, she ended up leaving her indigenous self at the door. She talks about cultural appropriation and her experience of being spiritually bypassed and whitewashed by coaches and mentors in so-called “safe” coaching containers.

Emily offers some super important insight on cultural appropriation, white guilt and tears, as well as the most beautiful solution for the First Nations communities — ceremony as healing. Emily also explains how imagination and therefore manifestation is also a privilege.

Ultimately, Emily's vision is a safe space where the Global Majority (BIPOC) can thrive and feel supported.

This episode is a beautiful reminder of how this industry — albeit transformative and well-meaning — emerged as a luxury product for wealthy white people and continues to perpetuate colonial ways of being and doing business, and life. And how it’s time for some radical change, here.

This episode is for anyone on who’s part of this industry and wants to do the right thing.

You in? Let’s go.

In solidarity,

Alex
